MONROE – In the morning hours of Tuesday, July 1, area law enforcement responded to a domestic disturbance near Recreation Park in Monroe.
According to Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley, at 6:42 a.m., police were called to a residence in the 2200 block of l6th Street on Monroe's east side by a 75-year-old woman who claimed that her 75-year-old husband was threatening her with a shotgun. Kelley identified the man as William F. Siegenthaler.
“The woman was calling from a bedroom,” Kelley said. “Officers were able to get the woman out of the residence through a window.”
The nearby neighbors were evacuated, as was the city’s nearby municipal swimming pool.
“At 7:26 a.m., after phone calls went unanswered to the residence, officers approached a back door with a ballistic shield and were able to get the man to come to the door unarmed, where they took him into custody without further incident,” Kelley said. “The 75-year-old man is being held and assessed further at this time.”
Siegenthaler was arrested for recklessly endangering safety, battery and disorderly conduct while armed, all under Wisconsin's Domestic Violence laws. Siegethaler was confined in the Green County Jail pending a court appearance.
The neighborhood went back to normal activities within a few minutes of the situation being successfully resolved, Kelley added.
The Monroe Police were assisted by personnel from the Lafayette County and Green County Sheriff’s offices.
