Monroe Parks and Recreation looking to fill openings in upcoming programs

MONROE - Monroe Parks and Recreation has a few openings in upcoming programs.

• The Monster High Doll Party is a new program. Those who attend can dress up like their favorite monster doll and bring their favorite monster doll to the party. Special treats, crafts and games will be set up. The program is for girls entering kindergarten through fifth grades this fall. The party will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18 at the Recreation Park South Shelter. The cost is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents.

• Super Kids Olympics is a mini-Olympics where boys will compete against boys, and girls against girls within their own age group. Events include an obstacle course, mini golf, capture the flag, basketball free throw, standing long jump, football throw, volleyball serve, soccer kick, shuttle run and scooter races. The program is for children entering first through fifth grade in the fall and will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 23 at the Recreation Park South Shelter. The cost is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents.

• Lego Robotics: Robo Battles Engineering for Kids camp will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Monday, June 23 through Friday, June 27 at the Community Center. The program is for boys and girls ages 7 through 14. During the Lego Robo Battles classes, students create, program and control robots designed to perform challenges such as the Sumobots, Jousting and Catapult Challenge. The cost is $140 for residents or $155 for non-residents.

• Summer Basketball Skills for children entering first through fifth grades will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays from June 17 through July 22 at the Northside Elementary gym. The cost is $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents.

• Volleyball Skills for children entering fourth through ninth grades will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from June 18 through July 23 at the Northside Elementary gym. The cost is $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents.

• Couch to 5K will be held from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays June 17 through Aug. 7 and will meet at Parkside Elementary School. This is a beginner's running schedule that has helped thousands of new runners get off the coach and onto the roads, running miles in three months. The group will split into beginning and advanced runners to accommodate the different levels of runner. The cost for the program is $20 and all participants will receive a T-shirt sponsored by Colony Brands.

• Disc Golf League will be held at 5:15 p.m. Thursday from June 12 through Aug. 26 meeting at Twining Park in the parking lot closest to the No. 1 hole. Register on site each Thursday. The cost is $5 with a payout each week.

• Tennis How to Play Singles and How to Play Doubles clinics will both be held June 16 through June 26. Both programs are for those entering sixth through 12th grades and will be held at the Recreation South Tennis Courts. Singles will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and doubles will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The cost is $25 for residents and $35 for non-residents. Program instructors are Brad Saugstad and Emily Grossen.

• Boys entering high school and in college will have tennis league on Tuesdays at Recreation Park tennis courts. Singles will be held from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. and doubles will be held from 6:15 to 7 p.m. The cost is $20 per league. League will run from June 17 through July 29.

• Girls entering high school and in college will have tennis league on Thursdays at Recreation Park tennis courts. Singles will be held from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. and doubles will be held from 6:15 to 7 p.m. The cost is $20 per league. League will run from June 19 through July 31.

• Grade and middle school tennis league will be held on Thursdays from June 19 through July 31 at Northeast Park tennis courts, with singles from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. and doubles from 7:15 to 8 p.m. The league is for girls and boys entering sixth through eighth grades. The cost is $20 for each league.

• Special Needs Tennis Skills for children with special needs will be held from 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. Thursdays from June 19 to July 24 at the Northeast Park tennis courts. The cost is $12

• Special Needs Basketball Skills for children with special needs will be held from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 17 through July 22 at the Northside Gym. The cost is $12.



Swimming Lessons

The Monroe Municipal Swimming Pool will be starting the following swimming lessons:

• ARC Special Needs Swimming Lessons for 7- through 12-year-olds will be held from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. Mondays from June 16 through July 28 with free swim from 5:45 to 6 p.m. The cost is $12.

• ARC Special Needs Swimming Lessons for 13-year-olds and up will be held from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. June 18 through July 30, with free swim from 5:45 to 6 p.m. The cost is $12.

• Parent and Child Instruction Level A for children up to 4 years old will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday, June 23 through Friday, June 27. The cost is $15 or $20 for non-residents. Parent/Child Level B will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. July 21 through July 25 is for children age 1 through 4 years.

• Preschool Aqua Swim Lessons for ages 3 through 5 years old will be held at the outdoor pool. The cost is $25 residents or $30 non-residents.

• Aqua Swim Lessons are for children ages 3 through 5 years old who do not fear the water and will work with a swim instructor on learning how to submerge themselves. These classes are for children who are comfortable without their parents in the water with them. Classes are Monday through Thursday with Fridays reserved for make up sessions due to inclement weather.

• Skippers I classes will be held noon to 12:30 p.m. June 16 through June 26, July 7 through July 17, July 14 through July 24 and July 28 through Aug. 7. The objective of Skippers 1 is to focus on water adjustment, safety and basic swimming skills. Skills: Submerge mouth, nose, and eyes, water entries and exits and water safety.

• Skippers 2 classes will be held 12:30 to 1 p.m. July 14 through July 24 and 12:30 to 1 p.m. July 28 through Aug. 7. Prerequisites are passing Skippers 1. The objective of Skippers 2 is to begin development of fundamental swimming skills. Skills: Submerge entire head, perform assisted kicking on front and back, float on front and back without support.
