Monroe moves away from ward voting for fall elections

MONROE - Aldermen decided Tuesday that each ballot will be the same for voters in the August primary and the November general elections, regardless of which ward they live in.

The Monroe Common Council approved the ballot change without discussion on an 8-0 voice vote. Alderman Michael Boyce was absent.

With the change, City Clerk Carol Stamm said the tallies will be simple: Tabulated votes will be unified as one final result, rather than numbers to be counted for each of the nine city wards. As a result, separate numbers for each ward will not be recorded.

On Aug. 9, voters will be deciding their preferred county officials in a partisan primary. November will bring the general election, including the decision for president of the United States.
