MONROE - A 36-year-old Monroe man pleaded not guilty to charges of sexually assaulting a woman at a residence in Monroe.

Ryan E. Leistiko was arraigned in Green County Circuit Court Wednesday and entered a not-guilty plea to a felony charge of false imprisonment and misdemeanor charges of fourth-degree sexual assault and disorderly conduct. Wisconsin law defines fourth-degree sexual assault as non-consensual touching or sexual contact with a victim and carries the penalties of a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted, the maximum penalty on all counts is seven years imprisonment or $21,000 in fines or both. The charges stem from an incident that occurred Dec. 28.

Court records allege Leistiko had been stalking the victim and groped her in an attempt to initiate sexual contact. The woman allegedly shoved Leistiko off after he attempted to hold her down, and then he locked her in a bathroom.

Leistiko remains free on bond with conditions that he not contact the woman or her residence. He has a status conference set for March 20.
