MONROE - A Monroe man whose two pit bulls were euthanized by court order in August was fined this week for the dogs' fatal attack on a smaller dog.
Lance G. Beutel, 26, was fined $515.50 for the non-criminal conviction in Green County Circuit Court of dog causing injury (after law enforcement warning).
His two pit bull-type dogs, Kira and Hallie, mauled an 18-pound bichon frise-shih tzu mix named Buddy in the 2400 block of 7th Street on Aug. 17, according to court records. Beutel's dogs had escaped from their fenced-in backyard.
The fatal mauling was the third time in about three years that Kira and Hallie have attacked other dogs while unleashed and unrestrained. Beutel was warned after the first incident in October 2012 and cited after the second, an attack on a cocker spaniel in August 2013.
Kira and Hallie appear to have been aggressive only toward other dogs, not humans. An officer at the scene of the August mauling noted in a report that the pit bulls were friendly toward him and one even licked his hand.
In a separate, civil case against Beutel, the City of Monroe successfully argued for Kira and Hallie to be euthanized. Beutel was ordered to pay for all costs associated with keeping the dogs in custody and euthanizing them, a total of $380.90, which he has paid in full.
