MONROE - A Monroe man was charged Thursday with strangling a woman after he attacked her in her home last week.
Joshua James Nielsen, 31, faces charges of felony bail jumping and strangulation, both Class H felonies, as well as misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.
According to a police report, Nielsen was charged after an incident on Jan. 25 in which he entered the residence of a Monroe woman and shouted at her before attempting to strangle her.
The victim said Nielsen, who was intoxicated, was "rampaging" about her residence before he said "I'm going to kill you and everyone else." He then placed his hands on the woman's neck and began to squeeze before letting go after several seconds.
The woman said she was not injured, but was light-headed after the assault.
Nielsen said he didn't remember anything about the incident, due to his intoxication.
The fact that Nielsen was intoxicated violated his bond from another charge of bail jumping earlier this month. This string of bail jumping offenses stems from a drunk-driving offense in August of 2016 in Dane County.
In the process of Nielsen's attempt to enter the residence, he also tore a screen loose from a door, thus incurring the charge of damage to property.
Nielsen signed a $3,000 signature bond Jan. 26 with conditions that he not consume intoxicants or have any contact with the victim or her residence.
Nielsen will appear in court for a preliminary hearing Feb. 24. His maximum possible sentence is six years in prison.
