Monroe High School German trip canceled

MONROE - Monroe High School's biennial German exchange trip is canceled this year but will be rescheduled for next year.

Terri Montgomery, the district's director of curriculum and instruction, said at a recent school board meeting that the students wouldn't be traveling due to a travel warning by the United States government.

As of April 21, the U.S. government has issued no travel warnings or alerts for Germany, but the Department of State updated its "Worldwide Caution" on March 3 to warn about "the continuing threat of terrorist action and violence against U.S. citizens and interests throughout the world," including Europe. More information can be found on the state department's website, travel.state.gov.

Montgomery said the trip will instead be scheduled for next year, so almost all of the students who were planning to go will still be able to visit Germany. Only one of the students is currently a senior and thus won't be eligible to go next year.

The Monroe school board denied a request earlier this school year to reschedule the June trip to March because of staff scheduling conflicts, despite a warning by MHS German teacher Kristin Bansley that the two-week trip may need to be canceled entirely if it couldn't be in spring.

"I definitely heard some grumbling, but with the decisions that we made as a board to make it in summer, that's what we have to do," said board treasurer Brian Keith.

Montgomery said the students are being refunded any money they already paid toward the trip.
