MONROE - Stressing the importance of offering nutritious meals to children during the summer months, the Monroe school district is offering free breakfast and lunch to all children under 18 in the district throughout June and July.

The district's summer food service program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, provides nutritious meals to children during the summer, when free and reduced-price school meals are typically unavailable. The program is designed to help fill a void created when school lunches are not available and help parents meet the nutritional needs of their children, according to a district news release.

Meals will be served at the Monroe Middle School, the same location as summer school. Breakfast will be served from 7:12 to 8:15 a.m. Lunch will be served from 11:55 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The program will be open Monday through Friday June 19 through July 28, except for July 3 and 4.

Under the program, free meals will be made available to children 18 years and under. Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private nonprofit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well.
