Monroe cops will now take your texts

MONROE - The Monroe Police Department can now receive text messages sent to its non-emergency number.

Through a partnership with texting service Zipwhip, residents who want to contact police about non-emergency services can text the department's number at (608) 329-2400.

This new service will allow police to better reach citizens with speech or hearing disabilities, as well as free up police resources by reducing lengthy phone calls about routine questions, according to a police department news release.

In addition, people who need to report suspicious activity will be able to do so in a safer, silent manner, the release said.

The service is not for emergency calls. In an emergency situation, residents are still strongly advised to call 911.

In addition, texting while driving remains illegal, regardless of the recipient.
