MONROE - On Tuesday, the Monroe Common Council:
Heard a number of appearances by the
public supporting a resolution be put on the next local ballot asking residents whether or not an amendment should be added to the U.S. Constitution specifying that corporations are not people. As a result, the council drafted a referendum question for the
April ballot regarding a question of whether or not corporations should be classified as people. The draft will be evaluated during its next meeting and considered for the spring ballot. If included for an advisory referendum, the question would come at a cost of no more than $100 due to a number of other items already planned for the ballot. Green County would cover the cost.
Considered creating a "Council as a Whole" Committee and/or eliminating standing committees. Council members agreed the Board of Public Works would be a separate meeting but disagreed on whether a council as a whole group should be an option. They moved the measure to be discussed at their next meeting.
Approved a resolution which designated Woodford State Bank as a public depository for a certificate of deposit.
Granted a temporary Class "B" fermented malt beverage license to the Monroe Blueline Club, Inc. for the semi-professional Blues hockey team home games.
Heard a proclamation declaring November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month by Mayor William Ross.
