MONROE - On Tuesday, the Monroe Common Council:
Authorized a $250 donation to the American Legion Zilmer-Riley Post 84 to go toward the cost of decorating veterans' graves in Greenwood Cemetery, and hosting the annual parade and service on Memorial Day. Parade and service will take place from 8 to 10:30 a.m. May 30. The Memorial Day parade will begin in Recreation Park and proceed to Greenwood Cemetery, where the Memorial Day service will commence.
Approved four special events: Main Street Monroe's annual Market on the Square event from May 4 to Oct. 29 of this year, with a market from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday; the Green County Conservation League Spring Youth Conservation Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 6 in Honey Creek Park; the Monroe Kiwanis Club Disc Golf Family Day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 14 in Twining Park; and the American Legion Zilmer-Riley Post 84 to hold a Memorial Day parade and service May 30.
Approved two permit applications for residents to keep live chickens within city limits. The applications were from Ryan Lindsey of 2038 Ridgeway Road for two chickens and from John Jewel and Kathleen Rinear of 2026 Ridgeway Road for four chickens. The council approved both applications on a 5-3 vote. Aldermen Brooke Bauman, Chris Beer, Charles Koch, Tom Miller and Richard Thoman voted in favor of the applications while Ron Marsh, Jeff Newcomer and Reid Stangel voted against. The permits will be effective from May 4 to July 31, which is the annual renewal point for all applications under the ordinance.
Allowed a temporary extension of a licensed area for Leisure Lanes to use space for an outdoor beer garden in conjunction with car shows and bean bags league. The area was designated with a Class B liquor and fermented malt beverage license. The beer garden will be roped off in the lot area south of the building, and is approximately 64 feet by 176 feet. It will be used on June 17, July 15 and Aug. 19 for car shows and on a number of dates throughout the three months from 5-9 p.m. for bean bags league.
Authorized the purchase of a Cat 416F2 backhoe/tractor loader for $77,795.
Recognized the four students in government, Nate Smith, Abigail Yurs, Isabel Bazley and Brooke Rowe, for their time as Youth In Government participants. The program was instituted on March 3, 2015 and the four Monroe High School pupils were approved on Sept. 1. Council congratulated and thanked each of the participants for their contributions. Each student thanked council in return. "It's been a really great experience and I feel like I've grown from it," Smith said, who is set to return to the program once more in his senior year.
