MONROE — On Monday, the Monroe Common Council: 

♦ Appointed Ryan Ziltner to the Monroe Redevelopment Authority.

♦ Replaced resigning Monroe Housing Authority member Jan Lefevre with Marilyn Kubly-Schmid to fill the unexpired term until Jan. 31, 2020. 

♦ Authorized Main Street Monroe to hold Monroe Maxwell Street Days Aug. 3 to Aug. 5 in the downtown area. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 5.

♦ Witnessed the swearing-in of new Deputy Fire Chief Al Rufer by Assistant City Administrator Sam Liebert and the presentation of his National Fire Academy certificate and new badge by Monroe Fire Chief Dan Smits. Kris Rufer, his wife, pinned the new badge to his jacket.

♦ Granted a special event permit to FAITH Addiction Awareness of Green County to host its annual fundraiser 5K from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 25, beginning and ending at Monroe Clinic.

♦ Approved claims list and miscellaneous licenses.

♦ Authorized Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Green County to hold “Tour de Cheese,” a bike riding fundraiser event, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 throughout the city. 

♦ Granted a temporary Class “B” fermented malt beverage license to Knights of Columbus in conjunction with the 2018 Green County Fair beer garden.

♦ Agreed to temporary amendments to city “Class B” beverage licenses for license holders to add outdoor beer gardens in conjunction with Green County Cheese Days.

♦ Approved a special event permit application from TruHome Inc. to hold a customer appreciation fun day event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 in Honey Creek Park. 

♦ Heard a request from Alderwoman Donna Douglas to reinstate the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance before each council meeting, specifying that she felt any governing body she serves on not doing so makes her feel uncomfortable because there should be respect for the flag and what it represents.
