Monroe City Council: April 2, 2008

On Wednesday, April 2, the City of Monroe City Council, with Dan Henke absent:

• Heard a letter from Wal-Mart requesting the city change its Class A and malt liquor license quota, and allow Wal-Mart to have a license to sell the products in its new store. The request was sent to the Judiciary and Ordinance Review Committee.

• Approved Mayor Ron Marsh's appointment of Jan Lefevre to the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, to fill the term of Al Buri.

• Passed an ordinance annexing territory next to the Wal-Mart area, as was agreed, contingent upon Wal-Mart territory being annexed. The petition was filed Feb. 5 by Dorothy Munz, Judith Boisen and Tamara Stephens. The annexed area will be designated single-family residential and will be part of Ward 9.

• Approved payment of claims in the amount of $696,689.46.

• Approved a special event for Green County March of Dimes Walk from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 26. The event will start in the 1700 block of 14th Street. Monroe Police will pre-approve the route, and will control traffic during the event.

• Approved and accepted the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Agreement.

• Granted an electrical apprentice license to Chad Beeman, and an electrical appliance dealer license to Norstar Heating and Cooling, Inc. (Aaron Rowland)

• Gave approval to the Water Department to apply for a simplified rate increase up to 3 percent with the Public Service Commission.

• Approved a new contract with Green County Landfill, for a term of five years, with an automatic extension in five-year increments.

• Received the 2007 Police Department Annual Report, which will be reviewed at the April 14 meeting of the Pubic Safety Committee.

• Heard City Clerk Carol Stamm present the report of the Municipal Board of Canvassers.

• Received from Stamm an overview of the next council meeting, which will be a reorganizational meeting swearing in the newly-elected aldermen.
