MONROE - The Monroe City Band is currently rehearsing for its 65th season and is seeking new members. The group performs a series of free and open to the public summer concerts in the Swiss-style band shell in Monroe's Twining Park, beginning this year at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 9.
Membership is open to all those who play wind or percussion instruments and have at least three years of playing experience on their instrument. There is no membership fee.
Needed this season are players on clarinet, trumpet and percussion. Rehearsals are held at 7:30 p.m. Mondays in the Monroe Middle School Band Room.
The group's repertoire includes traditional "park band" music, including marches, overtures and show tune medleys, as well as movie music and works written specifically for the modern concert band. Theme concerts and guest soloists are also part of the musical mix, since the tastes and preferences of the audience continue to change. This year's concerts are scheduled for June 9, June 23, July 4, July 14 and July 28.
