MONROE - Patty James has resigned as executive director of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

James, who became the chamber's executive director in September 2007, will direct her efforts toward supporting the family farm.

"We have so many plans for our business that require my time and effort, and cannot be accomplished on a part-time or weekend-only basis," James said. "I have enjoyed my time with the Chamber and truly appreciate those businesses that have the best interest of Monroe at heart."

James has offered to work at the Chamber part-time through 2008. The Chamber's board of directors is reviewing the Chamber's structure and discussing next steps in finding James' replacement.

Bryan Rach, board president, said the board was disappointed to hear of James' decision, but understands and respects it.

"Patty has made a huge impact on the Chamber in the short period she has been with us," Rach said. "We have learned so much from her. We truly appreciate the support and dedication she gave to the director position."

James replaced Matt Urban, who announced his resignation in April 2007. He stayed on through August while the board searched for his replacement.

Urban was the Chamber's director for 13 years.
