MONROE - Work on the 16th Avenue project will begin June 9 on the Sixth Avenue end, Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent Jerry Ellefson told the Board of Public Works in a meeting Monday night.

Ellefson said the work will progress southward, replacing the sanitary sewer and manholes first, and then will return to the north end to replace the sewer laterals and the water service. Finally, sub-bases and pavement will be laid, starting on the north end.

Board member Dan Henke requested the marking of a bike path on 16th Avenue in an effort to make the city more bicycle-friendly. Sixteenth Avenue is a designated bike route from Twining Park to downtown. Director of Public Works Kelly Finkenbinder said the width of the street and parking would have to be taken into consideration.

In other action, the board:

• Authorized City Engineering Supervisor Al Gerber to seek bids for 2008 street reclamation for 25th Avenue from 13th to 17th Streets, and 16th Street from 29th Avenue to County K.

• Approved an agreement between Green County, City of Monroe and State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation for placement of a detention pond for the Green County Justice Center on state land.

• Approved payments in the amount of $5,143.88 to Whitney Tree Service for Parks Department stump and tree removal; $139,090.50 to James Thieding Construction for the 30th Street detention basin; and $5,525 to Haase Surveying for the Eighth/Ninth Street right-of-way plat.
