MONROE - During a meeting Monday, The City of Monroe Board of Public Works:

• Authorized to hire Precision Drive & Control, Inc., as electric contractor in the amount of $4,226 to install a soft start electrical system on Alpine Lift station control panel.

• Reviewed and discussed the 2008 Forestry Report. The city removed 87 trees from terraces and 92 stumps in 2008 at a cost of $42,842.86. In 2007, the city removed 72 trees. Tree trimming in 2008 cost $18,897.51. Sixteen trees and stumps were removed and other trees trimmed for public works projects in 2008, at a cost of $6,382.60. The city planted 62 new trees in 2008 under the terrace tree planting program. Since 1986, 1,783 trees have been planted on city terraces under the program. Eleven trees were planted in city parks in 2008. The City of Monroe was named a "Tree City USA" for the 20th year in a row.

• Authorized Park Supervisor Paul Klinzing to seek quotes for 2009 forestry work. Seeking quotes is a change from contract bidding in the past. City Clerk Carol Stamm said the city is allowed to seek quotes because tree trimming and removal is a service and does not involve construction, which requires bid contracts to be awarded. Klinzing said he would advertise for the services needed.

• Approved Hasse Surveying for surveying services for 2009 and 2010, at $95 per hour. Hasse Surveying was used for the past four years at $90 per hour.

• Approved bill for payment: Rock Solid Construction, $19,582.11 for 2008 sidewalk construction; Fehr-Graham, $373 for 16th Avenue sewer improvement program; and $14,424 for Wal-Mart utility inspection; Green Valley Disposal, $3,078.30 for November recycling.
