MONROE - During a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:
Approved for payment bills from Green Valley Disposal in the amount of $3,712.55 for December recycling.
Accepted a bid from and awarded Irv's Masonry a contract for masonry work to close coal bin openings below buildings on the downtown Square area in conjunction with the streetscape project. Irv's Masonry estimated a total of about $21,230 for the work. About 18 to 22 openings will need to be enclosed, according to Ryan Wilson of Fehr-Graham & Associates. Wilson said the bid was "substantially lower than what was budgeted" for the project.
Discussed the update regarding proposed waterlines around the perimeter of the downtown Square in conjunction with the streetscape project. Wilson said the plans are about 90 percent done, and expects them to be finished in a day or two, once a conflict with an existing storm drain is resolved. Once the plans are complete, they will be sent to DNR for review.
Accepted quotes for various chemicals for 2009 for the wastewater treatment plant.
Recommended to council to hire Ranmaker and Associates for slide inspection services for the city swimming pool; and for engineering services to comply with Graeme Baker Pool Safety Act.
Discussed alternative ideas for Clean Up Days, in view of the fact that the winter season has taken the Street Department over budget for street plowing. Director of Public Works Kelly Finkenbinder said the public will be informed of the canceled Cleanup Days, and of the alternative dropoffs dates and locations that are being planned.
Placed on the next agenda a discussion about the method of snow removal from the Square. Alderman Thurston Hanson said he received three complaints about snow being plowed after a weekend snowfall to the outside curb of the Square, where it remained until the following Monday, as according to city policy.
