MONROE - At a meeting Monday, the City of Monroe Board of Public Works:

• Authorized seeking bids for masonry work to close coal bin openings below buildings in the downtown Square area in conjunction with streetscape project. The project will be funded by TIF No. 7.

According to Fehr-Graham representatives Ryan Wilson and Tom Purdy, the work involves pulling off existing concrete sidewalks where coal bin openings exist, blocking the holes and filling the space. Purdy said the firm is documenting current sites, of which about 20 are known.

Wilson said an inspection of the bin areas will determine the condition of the building foundation walls and the size of the openings. Walls that may not hold up to the weight of the fill will be reinforced.

Closing up the bin spaces will eliminate a 1- to 2-week delay when the project gets under way in spring or early summer.

• Recommended the council hire Fehr-Graham & Associates, Monroe, for engineering oversight work of coal bins and also preparation of design and construction documents for a new water line around perimeter of the downtown Square, both for the downtown streetscape project.

• Approved for payment bills in the amount of $14,870.75 for the cost-share of a detention basin from D-H Builders, Inc., Monroe; $136.25 for review of Menard's PUD, $2,799.50 for downtown surveying maps and design, and $2,330 for engineering for water improvement program, from Fehr-Graham & Associates; $1,098 for tree trimming from Whitney Tree Service, Monroe; $2,269.31 for 8/9th Street project form Wisconsin Department of Transportation; $465 for certified survey map on Willow Way from Hasse Surveying, Monroe.
