MONROE - Monroe Arts Center begins the 2012-13 season with the first of three shows scheduled as part of the Sunday Concert Series.
The timeless combination of violin and piano will resonate throughout the Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall. Violinist Sarah Plum, accompanied by pianist Mei-Hsuan Huang, will present a classical program of music by Mozart and Beethoven at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23.
Plum began her performing career by winning the first prize at the International Stulbert Competition in 1984. She has appeared on stages in the U.S. and abroad as a soloist and chamber musician, as well as in contemporary music ensembles and top orchestras.
In Europe, Plum played in the West German Radio Symphony Orchestra (WDR) Cologne as well as the North German Radio Orchestra (NDR), and Saarlaendischer Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra. Her orchestral performances also included principal and concertmaster positions in the London Philharmonic, Saarlaendisches Staatstheater and Kristians and Symphony Orchestra. Since returning to the United States, Plum joined the faculty at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Plum has been heard in numerous TV and radio broadcasts on the WDR, NDR, Deutsche Welle, BBC, and Iowa Public Radio. Recent concerts include a tour of the Twin Cities with the Drake String Ensemble as soloist for the "Four Seasons" of Vivaldi, solo recitals of new music in Germany and Montana and a recital tour of the Midwest with pianist Kate Boyd. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School where she received a bachelor of music degree and master of music degree, and of SUNY Stony Brook where she received a doctor of musical arts degree.
Huang is an assistant professor of music at Iowa State University and a member of the Ames Piano Quartet. Born in Taiwan, she began studying piano at the age of 4 and earned her bachelor's degree at The National Taiwan Normal University, where she won the prestigious Xing Tang Temple Piano Competition Prize. Huang received her master's degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and her doctorate of musical arts degree at Ohio State University. She regularly performs more than 40 solo and chamber recitals every year in the United States, Canada and Taiwan. She has been invited to numerous summer festivals including the 2006 Aspen Music Festival; 2007 Pianofest in the East Hamptons; 2008 Orford Music Festival, Quebec; 2012 Banff Music Festival, Alberta; and the 2012 CICA Eureka Springs International Music Festival in Arkansas.
General admission seat tickets for this concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students 18 years of age and younger. MAC members may attend the concert for free.
