Money sought after Dec. storm

MONROE - The Green County Board of Supervisors Wednesday took the first step to try to recoup some of the money the county spent because of a winter snowstorm Dec. 8.

The board voted unanimously to declare a state of emergency as a result of the storm.

Green County Emergency Management Director Jeff Skatrud estimated the county spent more than $200,000 for overtime paid to highway department employees, the cost of equipment, supplies and police and fire department expenses to clear the more than 12 inches of snow that fell across the county between Dec. 8 and Dec. 10.

The state of emergency proclamation is the first step in the effort to get federal money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), he said.

Skatrud said the proclamation needed to be approved by the board in order to make a request to the federal department. Once the request is made, it will take a few weeks before the county learns if it will qualify for assistance and how much money it could receive.

Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick told the board the county spent about $239,5000 for clean up and services during the severe weather. The county was one of eight counties in the state to qualify for the federal funds, he said. If Green County's application for funds is approved by FEMA, the county could receive about $174,000, or 75 percent, of the cost.

The Dec. 8 storm left about a 12 inches of snow in Green County, and caused schools to close. A blizzard warning was in effect for the county for Dec. 8 and Dec. 9 as high winds caused drifting on area roads. Also, the storm caused power outages for about 1,700 Alliant Energy customers.

The storm caused several accidents in Green County. The weather contributed to a two-vehicle accident in which two people were injured on Wisconsin 11 at County M in Cadiz township. Several other vehicles went into ditches across the county.
