MONROE - Monroe Middle School students will compete in a Cricket Spit-off Monday, Sept. 19.

On Monday, Dan and Jeff Capps will bring their elaborate insect display, featuring specimens from throughout the world, to MMS as part of the seventh-grade Insect/Classification Unit. The Capps duo often shows their collection at Olbrich Gardens in Madison.

This will be Dan Capps' second visit to MMS. More than 10 years ago, he shared his love for insects with the students at MMS, and that experience became the impetus of the annual Ugly Bug Ball, complete with insect carnival games, skits, and contests. Since Dan Capps holds the Guinness Book of World Records for cricket spitting, he inspired a decade of students to compete for the school's champion cricket-spitter.

One of the reigning adult champions throughout the years has been MMS custodian Denny Buol.

Students have been practicing with raisins, and on Monday will have the opportunity to view the insect display in the school LMC and attend an all-school MMS Cricket Spit-off at the end of the day during eighth period.
