MONROE - The Monroe school board approved the hiring of Matt Brown for the Monroe Middle School associate principal position Monday.

He currently works at the Verona Area High School as special education case manager and special education department chair. He also served as a long-term substitute associate principal at Verona's ninth-grade building, and has filled in for the associate principals at the high school.

"His ability to make positive connections with students and staff alike will be a great addition to the Monroe Middle School," District Administrator Cory Hirsbrunner wrote in a news release. "References indicated he is a great listener with fair yet firm expectations."

An advisory team interviewed Brown and four other candidates. One more candidate was being considered, but pulled out before the interviews, Hirsbrunner said.

The advisory team included two school board members, an MMS parent, the MMS principal and five MMS staff members. An administrative team including Hirsbrunner, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Terri Montgomery, Director of Pupil Services Joe Monroe and District Business Manager Ron Olson also spoke with the candidates.

The school board voted unanimously to hire Brown along with several other consent items at Monday's meeting.
