MONROE - Thirty-five new cameras will be installed this summer at Monroe High School in an effort to ramp up security.

The school board approved the purchase of the security camera system Monday, May 13 at a cost of about $59,000.

The new security cameras will offer a better view in certain areas in the high school to increase safety, according to Ron Olson, the district's business manager.

"The old camera system, as far as the retrieval of footage and areas the cameras were in, was not what we wanted or needed," Olson said.

The 35 new cameras will be installed inside and outside the high school, Olson said. Some of the existing cameras will be relocated as part of the upgrade.

Olson said if there is a break-in, fight or incident at the high school, Monroe police officers can access the security cameras from their squad cars or the police station.

"With the things that have gone on across the nation, this gives us them (police) another tool and gives us another police presence at the high school," he said.
