MONROE - The Monroe High School students and staff participated in the third annual Day of Service Wednesday as an opportunity to give back to the community.
More than 700 students and nearly 80 staff members from MHS and the District Administration Center participated in the work events. The day included a kick-off presentation by Colony Brands CEO and President John Baumann.
He spoke to the staff and study body about the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community. He shared some experiences and the life lessons volunteering can inspire.
This year students got to chose from more than 30 different sites and 50 crews with opportunities to spend the morning hours volunteering. Locations included Bountiful Hope Gardens, the Kiwanis Youth Cabin, Green County Humane Society, Green County YMCA, Monroe Manor, Pleasant View Nursing Home, Monroe Arts Center, Monroe Theater Guild, Green County Historical Cheese Center, St. Victor's and St. Johns. Jobs included raking, painting, cleaning, building garden boxes, planting, spreading mulch and picking up garbage.
After a cookout lunch, the day was extended to the afternoon where the students had the opportunity to participate in enrichment areas around the high school.
Lamer's Bus Service donated all the busing services for the day.
