MONROE - The Monroe High School Student Senate helped students have some fun and raised money for a good cause at the same time.
The senate held a weeklong series of activities Feb. 16-21 to help raise money for the Wisconsin Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Some of the week's activities included a hat day, a techno-fury dance with black lights and music provided by student disc jockeys, and a teacher auction, in which students could "purchase" a teacher. The students then dressed the teachers any way they wanted. The students also had a carnival Feb. 21 at the high school. Different clubs at the high school had booths and there were plenty of games and activities to raise money.
The theme of the week was "Share the Love," senate president Melissa Hill said.
"We had a lot of fun," she added.
This was the first year the senate raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The high school students raised $2,000.
"This was the first year we did it, but hopefully it won't be the last," Hill said.
Brooke Sahlstrom from the Wisconsin Leukemia and Lymphoma Society accepted the check from the students Tuesday and thanked them for their hard work. Sahlstrom said that what they did is a good example of "kids helping kids."
"The number one cancer killer of kids under 20 years old is leukemia," Sahlstrom said.
