Memorial Day events planned for weekend

MONROE - Memorial Day will be celebrated this weekend with several events in Green and Lafayette counties.

• New Glarus will celebrate with a community fest, beginning at 5 p.m. today with festival rides, concessions and "Rock the Park" featuring five teen rock bands in New Glarus Village Park. The festival continues on Saturday with a fun run/walk (registration begins at 7:15 a.m.) a co-ed volleyball tournament, and music by Greenfield Brothers at 1:30 p.m., The Raindogs at 4:15 p.m. and Super Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the park.

• The New Glarus Town Hall Preservation Society will host Police Chief Steve Allbaugh's World War II collection and Grant Hurling's Civil War collection and re-enactor's collection of Civil War material from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Town Hall, 206 Second St., New Glarus.

• New Glarus Fest continues on Sunday with music by Richard Wiegel and Tom McCarty of The Midwesterners at noon, by The Invaders at 2:45 p.m., 2nd Thought at 5:15 p.m. and Lube at 8 p.m. in village park.

• Other events on Sunday include a Patriotic worship service with guest speaker Mike Marshall at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 853 31st Ave., Monroe. A potluck follows the service.

• Monroe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2312 and Ladies Auxiliary, will hold a scholarship breakfast Sunday, serving 8 a.m. to noon, at the Post Home, 1428 17th St., Monroe.

Memorial Day celebrations on Monday include:

• Argyle Memorial Day and dedication of Argyle Area Veterans Memorial at 11 a.m. at the memorial site in Village Park. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to Argyle High School.

• In Darlington, the Memorial Day parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Darlington Municipal Building, moves down Main Street to the bridge, then to Veterans Memorial Park for a program. In case of rain, events moved to Dora Ritter Wellness Center.

• In Juda, the Memorial Day service begins at 10 a.m. at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Juda. In case of inclement weather, program will be moved to Juda School gymnasium.

• In Monroe, the Memorial Day veteran's program begins at 6 a.m. by raising the flags on the Avenue of Flags entrance to Greenwood Cemetery. At 6:45 a.m., all scouts and junior auxiliary assigned squads will meet at the memorial monument prior to the 7 a.m. start to decorate graves. At 8:30 a.m. parade units assemble at Recreation Park. At 9 a.m. the parade travels from Recreation Park to Greenwood Cemetery; the program is at 9:30 a.m. in cemetery. There is a pot luck meal at noon at American Legion Post Home; the Avenue of Flags will be taken down at 2 p.m.

• In New Glarus, the parade begins at 9:30 a.m. with a veteran's day program at the high school following the parade. The firemen's pig roast is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. At noon, open euchre and variety of local talent with Macyn Taylor will be in New Glarus Village Park.
