MONROE — The condition of a Belleville man remained unknown late Monday, a day he was critically injured crashing his motorcycle into a car in the Town of Clarno.

At about 11:26 a.m. Sunday, deputies responded to the intersection of Steiner Road and Franklin Road for a report of a two-vehicle crash, according to police reports. During their investigation, police determined that, just prior to the wreck, a truck driven by Randy L. Goebel, 62, of Browntown, was stopped at the south end of the intersection, on Steiner.

Goebel reportedly looked both ways and did not see any vehicles, reports said.

“As Goebel entered the intersection, a motorcycle operated by Jeffrey J. Christen, 64, of Belleville, collided with Goebel’s truck,” said the reports. “Christen was ejected.”

Christen was not wearing a helmet. Christen sustained life threatening injuries and was transported by helicopter to a Madison hospital. The Madison hospital, reportedly UW Madison, and sheriff’s office could provide no further updates on his condition as of press time.

Goebel was wearing a seatbelt and there was no airbag deployment in his vehicle. Goebel reported he was not injured, according to police.

Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud said that, unfortunately the area does experience several motorcycle fatalities each season, although he wasn’t immediately sure how many there have been this year as oppose to in years’ past.

“It’s just sad,” said Skatrud. “It seems that most of (the more serious motorcycle injuries), they are not wearing helmets.”

Christen’s motorcycle sustained severe damage; authorities added. The Monroe Rural Fire Department and Green County Area EMS also assisted at the scene.
