MONROE — A seriously injured Madison driver was flown by Med-Flight helicopter to a Madison hospital following a crash Tuesday with a 16-year-old driver just south of Monticello, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

Christopher Andrew Gong Chin, 29, was in good condition at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison as of Wednesday afternoon, a hospital representative reported.

The two-vehicle crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. in the N6000 block of Wis. 69, south of Wittenwyler Road, in the Town of Mount Pleasant.

The other driver, 16-year-old Juan P. Gutierrez of Monroe, was also injured. He was taken by Green County EMS to the Monroe Clinic ER.

An investigation determined Gutierrez was southbound when he crossed the centerline, entered the gravel shoulder on the east side of the road, then entered the northbound lane and collided with Chin’s northbound vehicle. The impact of the collision caused both vehicles to go into the west ditch.

Gutierrez told deputies he fell asleep behind the wheel.

Both vehicles sustained severe damage with airbag deployment and were towed. The Monticello Fire Department assisted deputies and medics at the scene.

The accident remained under investigation as of Thursday, the sheriff’s office reported.
