MONROE - The May exhibit in the Monroe Arts Center's Frehner Gallery features the work of accomplished watercolor artist Connie Glowacki.
The Janesville artist will share her "Watercolors with Spirits," which will transport viewers to a special time and place of beauty and special insight. A fascination with light and shadow as they define shape and textures has led Glowacki to create a wide scope of subject matter. With images based upon her slides, photos and imagination, she allows her personality and emotions to shape her creativity as she combines images, compositions and values. Her ability to create the appearance of light passing through sheer fabric, light gleaming from a porch at midnight, or shadows cast down a wooden pier illuminating boats in the harbor, transport the viewer of her artwork to a special place in time or a fleeting memory.
Glowacki's work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums throughout the United States. She is a signature member of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society and the Honor Society of Watercolor USA. She and her husband Michael recently purchased a Door County gallery and will be opening their doors May 22 in the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek.
Also during May, the Monroe Arts Center will be "Brown Baggin' It" in the Artways Youth Gallery in Wesley Hall. This special exhibit will feature artwork from Monroe area schools from elementary through high school. Students from each school were asked to create artwork using paper bags as their main theme. Completed artwork could be two- or three-dimensional. Bags could be modified, cut, painted or sculpted using any additional materials as long as the resulting product still could be identified as coming from paper bags. Each school submitted its top 10 to 12 pieces for this special display.
The opening reception for both exhibits is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, May 7, in the Monroe Arts Center's Frehner Gallery. Glowacki will give a short gallery talk at 5:15 p.m. to discuss her inspiration and techniques. This opening reception, with refreshments, is a free, informal, come-as-you-are event. All exhibits will be on display May 7-29 and can be viewed any time during regular business hours.
These exhibits have been made possible by Monroe Arts Center Corporate Underwriter, Swiss Colony and Season Media Underwriters, BIG Radio and Monroe Publishing LLC. Additional support was provided by Michael and Shelley Muranyi.
