Master Gardener Training class to run this fall

MONROE - A Level l Master Gardener Training class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evenings from Sept. 4 to Nov. 20 at the Green County Justice Center Multipurpose Room, 2841 6th St.

University of Wisconsin-Extension specialists, local UW-Extension Certified Master Gardeners and Green County Agriculture Agent Mark Mayer will help coordinate and teach the classes.

Participants will explore the proper practices involved in managing trees and shrubs, lawns, landscape plants, flowers, fruit crops and vegetables. The course will also include discussions on insect management, composting, native and invasive plants, disease and weed management, cultivar selection, pruning, mulches and other horticulture activities.

Some of the training will be taught via WisLine and Internet format that provides live two-way live audio hookup with professors at UW-Madison who will be including Powerpoint slides and video in their presentations. In addition, many of the classes will be taught by local Master Gardeners who will present as live instructors. Class participants will receive two three-ring binders featuring a complete set of all the current UW-Extension horticulture publications and reference information on topics covered during the course.

Participants will become a certified UW-Extension Master Gardener Volunteer after completing the 36-hour course, and passing an open book exam. In exchange for this instruction, participants will be required to volunteer a minimum of 24 hours of community service time in the area of horticulture via their local county extension office.

The cost to attend the 12-week program is $150 per person. The program is open to anyone over the age of 18 and a minimum of five registered participants will be required to run the class. Registrations and fees must be received by Monday, Aug. 20 at the Green County UW-Extension Office to reserve a spot in the class.
