Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated Louis Armstrong first won election to the seat in 2010. The error has been corrected below.
MONROE - Former Monroe mayor Ron Marsh is running as a write-in candidate for Monroe's Common Council, challenging Alderman Louis Armstrong for the Ward 7 seat.
Marsh announced his candidacy Monday, Feb. 17. In a written statement, Marsh cited issues in current city leadership that prompted his decision to run for council.
He wrote that over the past four years of talking with voters and aldermen, and attending council and committee meetings, "one could only conclude the following: There has been a lack of transparency, conflict between alderpersons, disgusted employees, poor financial decisions, little economy growth and a lack of leadership."
"Our city can no longer continue down this path we are currently on," he wrote.
He wrote he is committed to "real transparency in city government. Decisions based on what is best for you, not what is best for special interest groups. The ability to say "no' when "no' needs to be said." In addition, he promised "sound financial decisions," an "aggressive economy marketing plan which will have an action plan, check points and attainable goals," and to bring back "true leadership."
Marsh previously served two terms as mayor; he won election after running as a write-in candidate in 2006, and he was unopposed in the 2008 election. He ran unsuccessfully for re-election in 2010.
Armstrong won election to the Ward 7 seat in 2012.
No other candidate has declared intentions to run for the seat.
