MONROE - A man who held police in a standoff for more than 13 hours as he threatened to shoot himself surrendered uninjured at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10.
The standoff began at about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 when Monroe police were called to a home in the 600 block of 19th Avenue on a report that a man, described as despondent, brandished a pistol in front of friends and threatened to shoot himself, according to a news release from the Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley.
The man was alone in the home. Kelley said there was no threat to the general public.
As a precaution, officers barricaded the block and asked residents in the area to remain in their homes and away from windows.
Police negotiators attempted to reason with the man over the telephone for several hours. At one point, the man fired the gun into the floor of the home, Kelley said.
After the man broke off contact, police broke a window in the home to get the man's attention. "Shortly after, negotiations broke down again, and at that point, police introduced percussion devices and ultimately, chemical irritants," Kelley said.
Negotiations resumed, and the man agreed to come out. He was taken into custody by tactical officers from Monroe and the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department without incident.
The man has been placed in emergency detention for a mental assessment due to the threat of self-harm, Kelley said. The Green County District Attorney will review the case for possible criminal charges.
Kelley said because the man is not under arrest, his name will not be released.
Green County Sheriff deputies also assisted at the scene.
