MONROE - A Monroe man was jailed Saturday after police say he was violent with a woman, spit on an officer and disturbed neighbors in an apartment building at 709 12th Ave.

Eric Gene Leibold, 49, faces a misdemeanor count of battery, two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and a Class I felony charge of throwing or discharging bodily fluid at a public safety worker.

His cash bond was set at $500 and his signature bond at $4,500 Tuesday in Green County Circuit Court with conditions that he not drink or go into bars or liquor stores. He has a preliminary hearing Sept. 15.

According to police reports:

Police responded to an anonymous call around 8:39 p.m. Saturday complaining that Leibold could be heard throughout the apartment building yelling at and beating a woman.

When police arrived, about five neighbors were in the hallway outside her apartment.

The woman told police Leibold threw her up against a wall, trashed her apartment, screamed at her and punched her in the face. She had a swollen and bruised lump around her cheek and left eye socket.

Leibold yelled at the neighbors standing outside the apartment and was uncooperative during his arrest, spitting in the direction of an officer. The spit landed on the officer's pant leg.

In letters submitted to police, one neighbor wrote that Leibold "does this on a regular basis." Another wrote, "My wife and I do not feel safe when he is around. Please keep him away from here."
