BENTON - A Benton man was arrested early Sunday after deputies followed a trail of scattered vehicle parts from the scenes of two hit-and-run crashes.
Joseph S. Trevarthen, 24, was jailed on a Department of Corrections probation hold, according to a release from the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department.
He faces numerous traffic citations, including driving with a revoked license, failure to notify police of an accident, littering and having open intoxicants in the vehicle.
The first crash happened northwest of Benton at the intersection of Roaster Road and County J and was reported at 3:47 a.m. Sunday. Deputies determined Trevarthen lost control of the 2002 Chevy Trailblazer he was driving, hit a stop sign and then continued southward into Benton.
Trevarthen was located at a residence on 3rd Avenue after deputies matched the scattered vehicle parts at the crash scene to the damaged Trailblazer parked outside.
He was cited and released until a few hours later.
At 6:43 a.m., deputies responded to another report of a hit-and-run that occurred around 3 a.m., again with scattered vehicle parts left at the scene. Trevarthen reportedly crashed into a residential yard on Main Street, hit a tree and drove off.
"Numerous vehicle parts, including a license plate, were recovered at the scene and on a nearby street," according to the release.
Deputies again located Trevarthen at a home on 3rd Avenue. This time, he was arrested and jailed.
He reported no injuries from the crashes. The Trailblazer was severely damaged and towed.
