MONROE - A bank robber remains at large after taking an undisclosed amount of money from Associated Bank by alleged gunpoint at roughly 1:50 p.m. Thursday.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley released a statement shortly after which described the robber as a white male in his 30s wearing all black clothing, "including a black hip-length parka-type jacket with a hood and sunglasses."

In his release, Kelley said initial investigation found the man entered the bank before walking up to the teller window and demanding cash. The robber indicated he had a weapon, but no bank tellers saw a gun.

After the suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency, he fled north of the bank, crossing residential yards on foot.

Kelley said Associated Bank had not, at press time, determined the exact amount of money taken.

Within minutes of the robbery, Monroe Police officers, Green County Sheriff's deputies and Wisconsin State Troopers were combing the nearby blocks along 14th Avenue, 15th Avenue, 11th Street and 10th Street. Police tape separated the sidewalk from the building and cars looking to enter the bank were waved to pass by and come back at a later time.

Kelley said he did not believe the incident has any connection with the ongoing case of at-large Janesville fugitive Joseph A. Jakubowski, a 32-year-old white man who stole several firearms from a Janesville gun shop after making threats to attack unspecified public officials or schools. Jakubowski is currently the subject of a nationwide manhunt. However, Kelley said his department would "look into every avenue."

Officers combed the area for more than an hour after the robbery, searching by vehicle and by foot with a K-9 unit attempting to track down the robber. As the school day ended and kids walked down a number of the same streets, officers continued along in uniform and bright yellow vests.
