MONROE - A Brodhead man was sentenced to 10 years in state prison Wednesday for drunkenly robbing a bar in Brodhead with a revolver in January 2013.
Richard Parot, 56, appeared in Green County Circuit Court and was convicted of one count of armed robbery, a Class C felony. Parot was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with six years extended supervision to follow and restitution ordered to be paid by 25 percent of his prison wages and the remainder during his extended supervision.
Parot had several misdemeanor counts dismissed: carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a handgun while intoxicated, operating a firearm while intoxicated and intentionally pointing a firearm at a person. Parot also had felony counts of intimidating a victim and false imprisonment dismissed.
Court records indicate Parot was drinking beer at M&J's Bar on West 2nd Avenue in Brodhead late in the afternoon of Jan. 16, 2013. Later that night, around 2 a.m., he asked to use the bathroom as the bartender was closing up.
Parot exited the bathroom brandishing a loaded .22 caliber F.I.E. Buffalo Scout revolver and pointed it at the bartender. Parot ordered the bartender to give him money from the safe and register and then stay in the bar's walk-in cooler until he left.
The bartender waited a few minutes in the cooler and then went to the police station across the street to report the robbery. He told police Parot had instructed him to "tell the police he was robbed by a black or a Mexican." Parot also threatened to kill the bartender if he told police what actually happened.
Investigators located the revolver and a box of rounds in a woodpile behind Parot's home on Taylor Trail in southwest Brodhead by following footprints in the snow. An officer also found a plastic bag filled with money near a hay bale and bank bags in a marshy area near the Sugar River behind a neighbor's home. Police seized $1,725 in cash, in and around Parot's home.
At the time of the incident, Brodhead schools were put under security lockdown as a safety precaution while officers executed a search warrant on Parot's home. Parot was arrested without incident on Jan. 17, 2013.
Parot also owes a fine of $176, as well as restitution.
