ARLINGTON - A man who pleaded guilty in July to killing a 22-year-old Iowan last year in a drunken driving crash in Gratiot was sentenced Thursday to 10 years.

John Drew Brewington, 24, Salem, is ordered to serve three years of his sentence in prison and seven years on parole for the felony conviction of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and a misdemeanor conviction of causing injury by operating while under the influence.

Lafayette County Circuit Court Judge Duane M. Jorgenson also ordered Brewington not to possess or consume alcohol, or go into bars or liquor stores.

The crash happened just before 2 a.m. Sept. 24, 2016, according to court records.

Brewington was driving a 2014 GMC cube van westbound on Wisconsin 11 in Gratiot when he swerved across the center line and collided head-on with a 2002 Lexus driven by Cameron J. Paddock, 22, Monticello, Iowa.

The impact of the collision knocked the Lexus into an adjacent field. Officers arriving on scene found Paddock severely injured inside. He was taken to a hospital in Dubuque and pronounced dead upon arrival.

A 23-year-old passenger in Paddock's vehicle, Monika L. Gorham, Roscoe, Ill., suffered minor injuries in the crash. She told police she was his fiancé.

Brewington, meanwhile, was found injured in his van. He claimed to have consumed two cans of Coors Light, but appeared noticeably intoxicated, according to police. He told officers he thought he hit a deer.

State court records show no prior criminal record for Brewington, just a few minor traffic tickets.
