JANESVILLE — A noncriminal charge has been filed against a Benton man related to the head-on crash Nov. 22 in Rock County that fatally injured the other driver, 62-year-old Fred Nafzger Jr. of Juda.
Monardo Martins Faria, 20, was cited Dec. 3 in Rock County Circuit Court with passing into oncoming traffic causing death, a forfeiture with a $1,397.50 fine. He has a non-mandatory court appearance Jan. 2.
The accident happened at about 6 p.m. Nov. 22 on Wisconsin 81 just east of West Beloit Newark Road, Town of Avon.
Faria was westbound in a 2008 Mazda CX-7 SUV when he tried to pass another westbound vehicle and collided head-on with Nafzger’s eastbound 2004 Toyota Corolla, according to a crash report by the Rock County Sheriff’s Office. Five people are listed as witnesses in the report.
Nafzger was pinned in his car and pronounced dead at the scene.
Faria suffered serious injuries in the crash. The SUV overturned onto its passenger side, with Faria partially ejected and pinned underneath. He was taken by ambulance to the MercyHealth hospital in Janesville.
Neither driver is suspected of alcohol or drug use prior to the crash and no intoxication tests were administered.
