Man convicted of misdemeanors after standoff

MONROE - A Monroe man coming down from crystal meth who held police in a standoff from his aunt's rooftop in April was sentenced earlier in December for related misdemeanor convictions.

Shane David Riley, 31, pleaded no contest Dec. 8 in Green County Circuit Court to Class A misdemeanor charges of trespassing and criminal damage to property. Terms of his two-year probation include completing any recommended treatment and counseling.

He also entered a two-year deferred prosecution agreement on a charge of failure to comply with an officer. The Class I felony charge will be fully dismissed if he successfully completes the terms of the agreement.

According to court records:

Riley had recently been released from a Rockford hospital for a drug-related medical issue when he broke into his aunt's house in the 1800 block of 8th Street in Monroe on April 26.

Police responded to the house for a reported burglary in progress. They arrived to find Riley on the roof and heard him loudly rack the action on a shotgun.

"Obviously paranoid and delusional," one officer reported, Riley demanded that police call the FBI, CIA and Donald Trump. Riley was "afraid that we were not the real police" and believed officers were members of a Mexican drug cartel come to assassinate him.

After a standoff and three hours of negotiation, Riley came out of the house and surrendered without incident.

During his medical clearance at Monroe Clinic, he admitted to using crystal methamphetamine in Argyle the previous night.
