DARLINGTON — Police are investigating a weekend hit-and-run spree that caused no injuries but damaged seven vehicles, a stop sign and some lawns around Darlington.

Mateo Domingo-Carmelo, 41, Darlington, is identified as a suspect and has been cited for driving without a valid license, no vehicle insurance, hit-and-run to an unattended vehicle, failure to notify police of an accident, reckless driving endangering safety and driving an unauthorized vehicle in a park.

He was also referred to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office for a criminal charge of obstructing an officer.

According to the Darlington Police Department, officers first became aware of the incident when damage to a vehicle on Ohio Street was reported at about 3:30 a.m. Aug. 2. Lafayette County deputies assisted in investigating.

The crashes don’t appear to be intentional.

“We do not think there was intent. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor,” Chief of Police Jason King said.
