MONROE - A rural Monroe man is charged with endangering the safety of a couple and their toddler when a stray bullet he shot from his driveway hit their car as they drove past, according to reports filed last week in Green County Circuit Court.

Michael Ray Anderson, 34, faces a Class A misdemeanor charge of endangering safety with the use of a dangerous weapon. Because he also reportedly lied about the incident to police, he faces a Class A misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer.

On July 18, a 42-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were traveling in their Chevy Uplander SUV on County KS when they heard a rapid succession of gunfire, "as if somebody was shooting an entire magazine," the man later told police.

One of the bullets struck the SUV between the rear side window and the hatch, narrowly avoiding the couple's 2-year-old child in the backseat.

Police traced the source of the gunfire to Anderson's home at W4239 County KS, Town of Jefferson.

Anderson had allegedly been shooting off a .40 caliber pistol in the direction of the road at an aluminum can lying on the ground in his driveway.

Police say Anderson admitted to drinking three Bud Light Limes before shooting the pistol.

At his initial appearance in court Aug. 31, Anderson stood mute on the charges. Not-guilty pleas were entered on his behalf. He has a pre-trial conference Sept. 22.

As conditions of his $1,000 signature bond, he is ordered not to drink, operate firearms or go armed.
