Man arrested for Benton standoff waives preliminary hearings

A 37-year-old Benton man who faces three sets of charges, including for a five-hour-long police standoff early Oct. 13, waived his preliminary hearing on his charges.

Anthony J. Lucey is charged with stalking, second-degree reckless endangering safety — use of dangerous weapon — domestic abuse, two counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety — use of a dangerous weapon, failure to comply with an officer putting a person into custody, harassment — fear of death — use of a dangerous weapon — domestic abuse, intentionally pointing a firearm at a person — domestic abuse, two counts of intentionally pointing a firearm at a person, disorderly conduct — use of a dangerous weapon — domestic abuse, two counts of disorderly conduct — use of a dangerous weapon, and four counts of misdemeanor bail jumping.

Lucey is free on $10,000 cash bond with the requirements he not have any contact with three victims or their residence, not have any contact with two children unless supervised by Lafayette County Human Services, stay away from alcohol establishments, and do not possess alcohol or firearms.

Lucey also faces a felony bail jumping charge for an Oct. 30 incident.

Lucey waived his preliminary hearing on all three sets of charges Jan. 21. His arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 25.

Lafayette County 911 received a report of a man being disorderly at the intersection of Main Street, Temple Avenue and Galena Street Oct. 12 around 7:50 p.m. The second call reported that the man had a gun, the Sheriff’s Office said.

When authorities arrived Lucey returned to his home and refused to cooperate with them, the Sheriff’s Office said. Lucey was arrested around 2:40 a.m.

Lafayette and Jo Daviess county sheriff’s deputies and Hazel Green and Galena police were joined by the Multi-jurisdictional Emergency Response Team with Lafayette and Green county deputies, Monroe police officers and law enforcement negotiators.

Seven residences near Lucey’s house were evacuated during the standoff.

Benton Fire and First Responders and Hazel Green EMS assisted law enforcement.

The incident is under investigation.

Lucey pleaded not guilty Aug. 14 to a charge of making harassing, threatening or obscene computer messages — domestic abuse for an incident March 20, and a disorderly conduct charge from an incident June 7. A status conference on those charges is set for Feb. 25.
