MONROE - The Monroe City Council approved Mayor Ron Marsh's appointment of Nancy Maliszewski to the Monroe Main Street Board of Directors Tuesday night.

Maliszewski fills a vacancy left after Sherrill Kelly resigned Sept. 5.

Kelly said she left the position to devote more time to her own business. Kelly owns and operates Uptown Girl, a woman's clothing store.

"Basically, I was looking into the future," Kelly said. "With the work at my store and my main Web site ready to go, I don't feel I have time to devote to Main Street and still feel I am doing a good job."

Kelly said she will remain president of the Monroe Downtown Business Improvement District (BID).

"A lot of the work overlaps with work at BID," she said. "I'll still know what's happening and can help shape that.

"(Resigning) was best for me and downtown. You have to set priorities sometimes," Kelly continued. "I'll have more time for my business, and I can still be active (with downtown)."
