MONROE - "A celebration of American music and more" is what's in store when the Monroe Arts Center's begins its 2013-14 entertainment season. The upcoming season marks MAC's 38th year of presenting entertainment for the entire family.

On the heels of the Wisconsin Music Arts Festival in June, a MAC special performance opens the 2013-14 entertainment season on Saturday, Sept. 14. The performance features five of the workshop session leaders. Joining this group on stage will be some of the participants from the festival workshops.

The popular Sunday Concert Series begins on Sept. 22 with the melodic sounds of the harp, flute, and cello by The Kithara Trio. Benjamin Capps, who has been hailed as a "young cello phenomenon from New York with dazzling technique," takes the MAC stage in October. Then pianist Richard Dowling, acclaimed by audiences for his "elegant and exciting style of playing," closes the series on Nov. 24.

Three shows will be presented at the Monroe High School Performing Arts Center in the coming season. On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Legends of Motown and More starring the vocal trio Horizon, recreate the magical sound of Motown in its glory days. Backed by a live band, the show combines singing and dancing.

The landscape, people, and culture of the American West come to life through song when the legendary Sons of the Pioneers perform on Saturday, Nov. 2 at PAC. For more than 75 years, these American icons have become synonymous with the American West and Cowboy. Known around the world for their trademark harmonies and haunting lyrics, they will share stories and perform their signature songs such as "Tumbling Tumbleweed," "Cool Water," and "Ghost Riders in the Sky."

The Irish Rovers bring their high-energy stage show to PAC on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Rovers have entertained audiences around the world and have now embarked on their final tour titled "Farewell to Rovin'."

Five main stage shows will be presented at MAC in 2013-14. Beginning on Saturday, Nov. 23 is the diverse music of The Barley Jacks. These masters of the fiddle, guitar, upright bass, and drums make every performance unique as they crank out tunes melding bluegrass, blues, Celtic, R&B, and be-bop. March brings the American jazz, swing, and gypsy music of Harmonious Wail.

In April, the Broadway performers known as Two on Tap pay tribute to the "Great White Way" with vocal renditions of classic Broadway songs, along with the classic precision of tap choreography. May turns up the heat with the hot sounds of the group, Salsabrosa. R&B and jazz influences blended with salsa, cha cha cha, and merengue. Salsabrosa dancers add to the spicy flavor of the show.

The season wouldn't be complete without authentic blues and soul music. Legendary blues singer and musician Mac Arnold, along with his Plate Full O' Blues band, serve up a heap of blues music in June. Arnold strums out rhythms and leads on his signature gasoline-can guitars and belts each song with "one of the most original voices in blues" music.

Other MAC performances include an evening of gospel and holiday songs in December by Madison's Mt. Zion Gospel Choir. The Madison Youth Choir, under the direction of Michael Ross, returns to the MAC stage in March to perform its spring program.

Numerous MAC-sponsored community events are planned for the upcoming season. The annual MAC Radio Live Showcase of Talent brings talented individuals in the area to the stage for two consecutive nights of entertainment in January. Other special events include the annual Holiday Silent Auction, the Underwriters Preview Party, a Taste of Spring, the rebroadcast of "A Christmas Carol Radio Show," and much more.
