Long-term parking considered

MONROE - Members of the City of Monroe Public Safety Committee are considering the need for long-term parking spaces in the downtown area, and are looking for feedback from the public.

City parking codes and permits currently require vehicles to be moved every 48 hours for street maintenance and to allow city street crews to clean up trash.

A long-term permit would let holders keep a vehicle in a space for about a week without moving.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley has had requests for long-term parking permits, "about two or three out of 20 or 30 permits," he said.

Kelley asked the committee to consider a different parking lot for the long-term permits, rather than in the "premium parking spaces" in the ramp.

The Committee held off making any decisions until the end of summer, when they will include consideration of the parking situation downtown after construction.
