MONROE - It seems to be Rosie Olson's nature to come up with new ideas and try new things.

That's how her radio show began a few months ago, when she discovered BlogTalk, an online forum where even amateurs can create radio shows. Olson, a Monroe resident, created her own: White Rose Talks in order to advocate for peace.

Finding peace is important to Olson for many reasons.

"Things happened in my life that need to not happen again," she said. "I want the world to be a better place - the statistics of violence in this country are appalling."

Today, Olson's show has turned into something much larger, and with a huge purpose. If she has her way, Olson hopes to raise enough awareness to eventually pass a bill which would establish a federal Department of Peace.

WhiteRose, her handle playfully dubbing her white hair and same-colored Fender guitar, is how many people know her. They tune in regularly.

"White roses are rare and different, and that's the way I like to be," Olson said.

It was celebrity artist Michael Bell who caught Olson's eye while looking for artists and creative people online. The two became friends, and it was him who suggested Olson try out blogging for herself.

Olson initially registered as a listener at the site, and although quiet, others noticed her and she finally called in. By January, she had registered as a host, and began volunteering for the US Department of Peace campaign. At that time, Olson said few were talking about peace on the site.

At www.blogtalkradio.com/white_rose_talks, anyone can listen to the radio show, either live or go back to listen at their discretion.

The show airs live Sundays at 3 p.m. and Olson says she'd love to see some local support. Listeners are welcome to call in to the show with questions, comments or concerns and can add her as a friend and a favorite, which helps her ratings. Listeners don't even need to be around a computer to call in to the show. Eventually, Olson's hoping to find local sponsors as well.

"I would love to see my local community support me in this," she said.

Although getting a Department of Peace established is her ultimate goal, Olson's immediate goal is even simpler: To get Wisconsin more active in spreading the word on peace. Olson says she's even hopeful that Monroe could be the first city in Wisconsin to pass a resolution of peace.

For Olson, finding peace is something she hopes will be conquered. "Who knows where I'll go from here," she concluded.
