MONROE - The populations of Green and Lafayette counties have grown at a slow pace, though slightly faster than the state, over the past year.

The Department of Administration reported Friday that Wisconsin's population grew last year at its slowest rate this decade. Despite the 0.2 percent growth, the department reported that the population has grown 6 percent since the 2000 Census.

The population in Green County grew 0.3 percent to 36,493, during the past year, according to the department. Lafayette County's population is estimated to have grown by 0.8 percent in the past year, to 16,468.

The new estimate is that Wisconsin has 5,688,000 people as of Jan. 1. That is up more than 324,000 people since 2000.

Since the 2000 Census, Green County's population has grown 8.8 percent, and Lafayette County's has increased only 2.9 percent.

The department says much of the growth is focused in the Fox River Valley, parts of western Wisconsin, Dane County and the southeastern part of the state.

Milwaukee County's population dropped nearly 1 percent.
