Local producers win at 2013 ACS Judging

MADISON - The American Cheese Society announced the winners of its 2013 ACS Judging and Competition. The competition had 257 companies submitting 1,794 different products.

Unlike other cheese competitions, where cheeses are only graded down for technical defects, ACS's goal is to give positive recognition to those cheeses that are of the highest quality in their aesthetic and technical evaluation. As a result, the highest quality cheeses are those that ACS feels deserve the recognition of an award, based on a minimum number of points awarded (totaling 100 points possible) for first, second, or third place.

The following local producers won awards.

Alouette Baby Brie 13.2 ounce - third place in soft-ripened cheeses: Brie made from cow's milk



Brunkow Cheese, Darlington

Fire Roasted Hatch Chile Baked Cheese - third place in flavored cheeses: International-style with flavor added, all milks



Edelweiss Creamery, Monroe

Muenster - third place in American originals: Brick muenster made from cow's milk



Emmi Roth USA, Monroe

Roth Grand Cru Reserve - first place in American made/international style: Open category made from cow's milk

Roth GranQueso Reserve - second place in Hispanic and Portuguese style cheeses: ripened, all milks

Roth Petite Swiss - second place in American made/international style: Emmental-style with eye formation made from cow's milk

Roth GranQueso Double Aged - third place (tied) in Hispanic and Portuguese style cheeses: ripened, all milks

Roth Reduced Fat Havarti - third place in low-fat/low-salt cheeses: Light/lite and reduced fat cheeses
