MONROE — The day starts at 6 a.m. Monday, May 27 with Zilmer-Riley Legion Post 84 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2312, assisted by local Boy Scouts, raising the Avenue of Flags, leading to Greenwood Cemetery. 

Parade units will assemble at Recreation Park at 8:30 a.m. and commence to the cemetery at 9 a.m. A decorated float unit will be provided for veterans to ride to ride on, if unable to march. Upon arrival at Greenwood Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., the program will start with the National Anthem by the Monroe High School choir. Invocation by Pastor Daniel Krahenbuhl, Monroe Bible Church, Monroe, followed by Logan’s Order given by Amelia Suthers. Jonathan Callaway will deliver the Gettysburg Address. The Monroe High School Band, directed by Rob Cunningham, will provide musical selections. Donald Redden is scheduled to deliver the Memorial Day address, followed by roll call of deceased veterans of Green County, read by Jim Glessner.

Conclusion of the Memorial Day service includes Taps played by Brady Schuh, and the benediction by Pastor Daniel Krahenbuhl.Monroe area citizens are invited to participate in honoring the men and women who have served and those who are still fighting for freedom. 

There will a potluck dinner served at noon at the Zilmer-Riley American Legion Post Home, 1627 12th Ave., Monroe. In case of rain, the Memorial Day Program will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post Home.


Juda Memorial Day service set

JUDA — The Juda Memorial Day service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 at Mount Vernon Cemetery, a half mile north of Juda. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the Juda School.


Memorial Day Dedication planned at GCVMP

MONROE — The Green County Veterans Memorial Park will hold a Memorial Day Dedication at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26. 

GCVMP President William Hustad will begin with opening remarks, followed by GCVMP Vice President Larry Ayres who will present the invocation. The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem will follow. 

This year’s guest speaker will be the VFW State Commander Gundel Metz. Board member Donna Douglas will then read names of recent donors, monetary donors for brick and war era plaques. Ayres will present closing comments. The Green County Sheriff’s Department will present the Color Guard and taps will be played by board member Alex Olson.


Memorial Day at Greens Prairie Cemetery

MONROE — The Greens Prairie Cemetery Association will host its annual Memorial Day celebration at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 27 at Green Prairie Cemetery, on Postville Road about 3/4 of a mile north of the village of Postville between County H and A, west of County J. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in the York Town Hall in Postville. Veterans will be honored of three wars who are buried in the cemetery area. In addition, learn about the family cemetery of John S. Stewart.
